Abstract (Document Summary)
Russian cosmonauts tossed a spent thruster engine into space and examined a faulty valve yesterday during the first of three spacewalks intended to keep the aging space station Mir running smoothly and pointing toward
the sun.
The two cosmonauts spent more than six hours in open space during the mission, in which they crept along a 46-foot girder to the engine, detached it and shoved it away from the station.
The engine ran out of fuel last week, forcing spacewalking cosmonauts to rush back to the station and switch on another engine that restored Mir's orientation.
