By Rachel Layne July 31 (Bloomberg) -- Tyco International Ltd., the world's biggest maker of security and fire systems, beat analysts' estimates with a third-quarter profit of $199 million, led by higher sales of industrial valves. The company said profit this year will exceed its previous forecast, sending the shares up the most in four months. Profit from continuing operations of 41 cents a share compares with a loss of $3.05 billion, or $6.17, a year earlier when the company had costs to settle a lawsuit and split into three. Revenue in the quarter ended June 27 rose 11 percent to $5.2 billion, Bermuda-based Tyco said in a statement today. Chief Executive Officer Edward Breen, 52, is divesting slower-growing divisions and moving plants to lower-cost areas. Sluggish North American retail demand limited sales growth at the ADT security unit to 5 percent, while profit rose 17 percent. Tyco's performance against analysts' expectations ``was broad-based with all segments reporting higher revenues and profitability versus our model,'' Nicole Parent, a Credit Suisse analyst, wrote in a note to investors. Excluding some items, profit was 88 cents a share, exceeding the 67-cent average of 13 analyst estimates in a Bloomberg survey. Year-ago profit excluding some items was 51 cents a share. Forecast Raised Full-year profit excluding some items will be $2.97 to $2.99 a share, up from an earlier projection of $2.65 to $2.75, Tyco said. Analysts, on average, predicted 2008 earnings of $2.75 a share. Total operating margins of 12.1 percent exceeded the company's own forecast of 10 percent, with one-third of the difference coming from the ADT and the fire protection services divisions, Breen said. ``This was clearly a good quarter and we continue to make solid progress refining our portfolio and carefully allocating our capital,'' Breen told investors on a conference call. ``Our results were strong in almost every area, which was satisfying.'' Organic sales, or revenue from businesses Tyco has owned more than a year and excluding translation of currency into U.S. dollars, rose 6.2 percent. Tyco got about 53 percent of its sales from outside the U.S. last year. In the quarter, Breen agreed to sell the Ancon building products unit for $174 million in cash, while he purchased the security unit of FirstService Corp. for about $187 million to add banking and energy customers. Unit Results Profit at ADT, the largest unit, rose to $239 million on $2 billion in sales as margins improved 1.3 percentage points to 12 percent. Sales outside the U.S. helped temper a 1 percent decline in systems and installation revenue because of the slowing retail market, Tyco said in its statement. Profit at the flow control segment, which sells valves to the oil and gas industry as well as municipalities, rose 23 percent to $152 million, helped by the sales of thermal control products. Profit at the electrical and metal division rose three-fold to $141 million on a 26 percent revenue rise as Tyco was able to pass on price increases in steel and other metals for tubing and conduit. The safety products division had a profit increase of 10 percent to $79 million on a 16 percent sales gain, while the fire protection division posted a 67 percent income rise to $97 million on an 8 percent increase in revenue. $1 Billion Tyco had costs totaling 47 cents last quarter including 39 cents for debt refinancing and to settle a bondholder lawsuit related to the split, 7 cents for restructuring and 1 cent for legal expenses related to shareholder lawsuits stemming from before the company's split, spokesman Paul Fitzhenry said. So far this fiscal year, Tyco has received $1 billion in proceeds from its divestitures, the company said. It also authorized a $1 billion share repurchase program in the quarter after completing one of the same amount. Tyco settled the bondholder lawsuit for $250 million in April.
