American engineers, meanwhile, build a pretty good case on behalf of the traditional or conventional two-valve-per-cylinder layout used by domestic manufacturers such as General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Corp. Their defense of the conventional engines goes beyond sour grapes. Don Miles, who oversaw development of GM's multivalve "Quad 4" engine and is now chief engineer for V-6 power trains at GM's Buick-Oldsmobile-Cadillac Group, says there are plenty of technical reasons to stick with the traditional two-valve-per-cylinder layout.
