                                                                                          Artificial Intelligence

As it was, I saw this movie a year ago, but I could not write down my feeling and understanding into characters, just because at that moment I was shocked. It’s not until today that I think I am capable of pouring it out with a mind of calm and keeping this memory everlasting.

Actually, I heard about this movie years ago, but I did not watch it. Having seeing its title and searching out its brief introduction, I was convinced by my narrow perspective that, there is no difference between this movie and the other ones with the same theme, some plots like: a robot kid is adopted by a human mother, and at the beginning it’s hard for her to accept it by her heart, but after a long-term company with each other, she accepts him completely, ; however with no choice she has to abandon him… So, before I had watched it, I had already considered that, the ending would be abandoning, for the purpose of torture, torturing humans’ hearts, whether or not humans ought to have emotions with robots, whether or not it’s unethical to abandon robots who have already possessed emotions.

But, when I finished watching, I got something shocking. The scriptwriter was more brilliant than what I could imagine. What I supposed to be end is what the movie starts to start. The real story happens on the robot kid who is already abandoned.

In the movie, the robot kid is called David, abandoned with a toy bear called Teddy, which has low-level artificial intelligence. David knows the reason why he is abandoned, because he is not a real human kid. Thus, wholeheartedly, he wants to find out the Blue Fairy, who can make him become a real human kid. Unfortunately, he does not know that, the fairy is just a fairy, just a human’s nice dream. The Blue Fairy, who makes Pinocchio become a real human kid, cannot perform her sweet magic in the real world. So, even though, with his mother’s love kept in his mind, he goes through uncountable and unimaginable difficulties, in order to become a real human kid, get back his home and rush into his mother’s arms, never can they come true.

Of course, if it’s only a story as simple as Baby Tadpoles Looking for Their Mother, I could just be touched, rather than be shocked. Precisely, everything he experiences on the way to find out the Blue Fairy, shows up what the movie wants to express: the thought of brutality of human nature, because there are plenty of brutal scenes, shown directly or politely to audiences.

Brutal scene one: Both David and another wanted robot Joe are caught and brought into an open-air ground, where is performing scenes of crazy massacre. Crazy humans are killing innocent robots. Having seen incomplete robots kill by abnormal methods, even though there is no one droplet of blood, I still felt sick. And this massacre reminded me of massacre among humans. In the human history, how many inhumane massacres happened, happening, will happen, much more difficult to imagine than this one? Around the high wall, there are dazzling lights directing into the ground, signifying the power of terminate termination, destroy, the world end. While at this moment of the movie, I paused to figure out, why? Because are do humans worry about being conquered by robots? It seems to be. But I also noticed that, Teddy is not the target to be killed, although it always repeats that it’s not a toy. The only explanation is that, humans turn a blind eye to artificial intelligences without humanlike figures images. So we can say that, humans hate robots because of their humanlike images figures, not their intelligences. As Like lots of political battles, people A wears down people B who will surpass people A in the same field. However, people A will do nothing to people C who is skillful in the other field, even people C are is excellent.

Brutal scene two: escaping from the ground, David and Joe wander in the forest. Suddenly, Teddy says it sees the moon. But it regrets saying that words when realizeding that, the disguised moon is precisely the figure of the killer robot. Once, David likes to follow with the direction of the pure moon hanging in the black sky, like a light of hope in the dark, but after the suffering of the killer robot, he is afraid of going that direction, the direction where that reminds him of death, and he has no choice but to change into the opposed one, even if it is dark. In our minds, the moon is usually the symbol of dream, tracing back to E.T. – the bright moon in the end, what a beautiful and quiet night! On the contrary, in this movie, the full moon converts into the symbol of dread. To David, it is his dread to the confused way he is heading to, as well as the bridge to his dream.

Brutal scene three: under the submersed city of Manhattan, swimming to the amusement park in the bottom of the sea, David makes a wish to the Blue Fairy. He repeats again and again, wording his dream which can never come true, but still devoutly has a faith in it, what a pity? Cruelly, the language of the scene places an illusory hope to David, and then let spread this sorrow to audience. And that never says enough, while you were seeing the Manhattan in the state of devastation immersed in the sea, what did you have in mind? Although it was the witness of glories recorded in the human history, now in the movie, it’s just the grave of the human culture. What is more, it goes undoubtedly that the makers are exactly our humans. I think the director tried to warn our humans of damaging environments on the earth without restraints, showing the consequence with a kind way of extremeness.

Brutal scene four: two thousand years later, David is rescued from freeze by aliens. When waking up, he realizes that he is at home, and he is so excited to shout “mom”, looking after her around the home. I had thought that, the director arranged a powerful alien, to give David a perfect end, but I was wrong, still David cannot be a real human kid. The cloned mother by aliens, filled into her own memories from the time tunnel, is just able to live one day no more.

The movie is adapted from a short story Super-toys Last All Summer Long. It was the movie of Stanley Kubrick, who had directed it, but unfortunately he had gone when leaving it unfinished. As a result, the friend of him Steven Spielberg continued and finished it. From the style of Kubrick, the movie would end up “wishing”, but Spielberg added to an end of “two thousand years later”.  Several people criticized, that Spielberg made an unworthy continuation of a great work. But in the light of me, I think that, maybe Spielberg really did not want to be too cruel to David, so he gave him a chance to make his dream come true, living happily with his mom, even though only one day.

Artificial Intelligence tells a story from the “birth” of David to the “Death” of him, totally dissecting the human nature, demand, emotion, happiness, sorrow, depression, dread, confuse confusion, hope and pursue pursuit, which happen on to David, from his “nothing” to his “humanity”.

In a conclusion, Artificial Intelligence is no doubt a profound movie, a shocking movie.
