[LATEST UPDATE: JANUARY 8, 2010] I have been continually updating my survival guide which was first posted here a couple of months ago. I have copied below the latest version of this, which is also posted at . Please note that like many others on this blog site I believe we need our plans in place THIS YEAR but have chosen the website name 2012ready.com to denote that it's purpose is how to survive/live FOLLOWING the pole shift which I personally think will happen by 2011.
Information on preparing for a long-term interruption in the supply of food & modern services:
This website discusses how to prepare for a worst-case scenario arising from a shift in the Earth's terrestrial poles. This event is theorized to occur possibly as soon as late 2010 or early 2011 due to an astronomical body many times the mass of Earth making a passage within approximately 10-15 million miles of our planet. It is theorized that the object would act as a "bully magnet" on our planet due to its North Pole pushing away the Earth's North Pole and causing the Earth to tip on its axis – with the result being an adjustment in the location of the Earth's terrestrial poles. A worst-case scenario for such an event is wide-scale devastation in the short-term – particularly in and around coastlines, fault lines, volcanic regions, mountain building zones, cities, as well as on broad land areas resting on subduction plates. Such event could also significantly interrupt our food supply: in the short term as a result of wide-scale devastation of cities, machinery, factories, bridges, roadways, etc., and longer term due to the blockage of sunlight for up to several decades as a result of wide spread volcanic activity. Such worst case scenario would also likely result in a break-down of organized social systems and modern services for an extended period, and thereby require that one pre-establish the knowledge and tools which are necessary to be an "independent homesteader".
KEY AREAS TO ADDRESS ARE AS FOLLOWS:
I. BOOKS PROVIDING INFORMATION ABOUT SURVIVAL, HOMESTEADING, WILDERNESS LIVING, ETC.:
Information will be one of the most valuable resources in the event of a pole shift. If the general population comes to believe this is an imminent possibility then books providing critical information may become difficult to obtain (though one can always rely on the Internet and printing such information from applicable sources). Moreover, it will be difficult to learn homesteading and survival skills under high stress conditions. Therefore, it is recommended that informative books be the first and foremost addition to a survival kit and that one at least becomes generally familiar with homesteading skills while not under stress. Topics investigated should minimally cover wilderness survival techniques (which would provide an overview of foraging, trapping and primitive skills); how to locate edible wild plants; and guides to animal husbandry, intensive gardening and homesteading skills. By researching such books at an online source such as Amazon.com one is recommended ,other similar types of books that may be of interest with the added benefit of user reviews and ratings. Furthermore, the non-profit group Troubled Times (accessible through ZetaTalk.com) offer lots of information including a free/downloadable booklet on how begin to prepare for life after a global cataclysm such as a pole shift. Section X at the end of this discussion is a listing of recommended books, all of which can be researched and purchased through Amazon.com.
II. SHELTER:
Modern society is dependent upon utilities such as public water and sewage processing systems (each of which in turn depend on electricity), and urban settings in particular depend upon transport and delivery of food. In the event of a wide-scale crisis that led to long term disruption of these services, being located in a high-population area would be potentially disastrous. There are also considerations to be made in respect of the potential physical consequences of a pole shift (including the aftermaths of potential climate change, flooding, reduced sunlight and volcanic ash which would devastate farming efforts for at least several years). Based on the foregoing, a recommendation would be to establish a location that is at the conjunction of a large wilderness tract and a farming community, preferably also within proximity of a river or lake that is not at risk of contamination from sewage (as people can no longer rely on sewers) or industrial pollution and which does not pose risk from major flooding that will occur in the immediate aftermath of the pole shift. If locating near a lake then consider one that has large banks to support the flowing-in of nutrients that will be scarce when sunlight is blocked. Other considerations on general site selection are as follows: low levels of population density and crime; far from cities, nuclear plants, prisons, and ocean shorelines (ideally at least 100 miles inland subject to being 200 ft above sea level); very far from any current and historically active volcanoes; not on a seduction plate, major fault line or at edge of crustal plate; surrounded by hillsides to buffer any winds; and minimum elevation of approximately 1000 feet as sufficient movement of the terrestrial pole would result in a melting down of existing poles before the new poles build up. It should be noted there are countless unpredictable variables and thus “guaranteed safety” is not possible and undeterminable events such as the new location of the pole could upset any such plans. However, the foregoing parameters should theoretically increase the odds of survival many-fold relative to if one were exposed to several of the above conditions. Moreover, one is highly encouraged to read the Safe Locations material in the Zeta Talk website for more specific information on the consequences to various geographic regions of a pole shift as theorized on that website. This includes information on proper safety precautions for when earthquakes are occurring world-wide (the punch line being that at the time of the actual pole shift it may be safest to dig a ditch and sit in it covered by a large piece of metal or sod-covered board).
With respect to specific site parameters, large fields/meadows will allow for livestock grazing provided strong perimeter fencing is available (adequate height and strength to accommodate various animal types, esp. goats which are known to escape). Animal pens, barns and chicken coops will be needed to house livestock – and the barns will ideally be configured to accommodate various types of animals. Means of manually irrigating crops (e.g., ability to divert waters from a creek, which will also be beneficial if trying to generate electricity from microhydro), though crop irrigation is not an issue immediately after the pole shift when instead one must ensure there is proper drainage and run-off from the property.
Manual well pumps (would be safest to have parts disassembled and then to assemble after pole shift; use brass fittings for corrosion control and consider also having tools/supplies on hand to dig new wells in the event earthquakes destroy existing ones) or alternatively spring-fed creeks or pond(s) (though springs may be unreliable and water can be contaminated). (See commentary below in the discussion on Food for the importance of ponds to a reliable food supply.) Root cellar and/or basement to store perishable goods since electricity will be unavailable. Earthquake-resistant construction (masonry is worst whereas post/beam, SIPS, and log are better, and dome/earth-bermed construction is best). Soil with favorable characteristics (drainage, ph, composition, etc). Lookout and/or protection from hill on one or more sides and off of main thoroughfare in order to provide for security from “roving gangs”. Near a farming, Amish or homesteading community to provide community resources and support – though avoid the widely known Amish communities since they are likely to be overloaded with displaced people in need of assistance. In an area where septic and wells are widely utilized to reduce risk of contamination of water supplies from neighbors. In general, a remote agricultural area is most desirable.
To provide insurance against the possible destruction of the intended shelter one may wish to also have an RV such as an Airstream which is made with stainless steel construction and designed to withstand accidents and which has a suspension system (it has the added benefit of being a home that can be towed/relocated (even possibly with animals) 。assuming such services are later available and one has chosen a spot which is not desirable to remain at, and by not having a motor attached, one is not beholden to extra towing weight). Alternatively a tipi or a pole tent designed for winter conditions can be used. In the case of a pole tent one should strongly consider a type that can accommodate a tent stove (a portable wood stove that can be used in a small location such as a tent or RV). On a related note it is important to disconnect and move as far away as possible any gas lines, propane tanks, etc. which may erupt during the earthquakes.
Furnishings should be stored in a manner that resists earthquakes (e.g., avoid having heavy or glass items placed on shelving). A marine closed cell mattress will repel excessive humidity that will be present, or alternatively have available vinyl zip covers for traditional mattresses and pillows. A Thermarest nylon covered self-inflating camping pad w/ inner foam layer to limit heat exchange with the ground is recommended if living in a tipi or tent. A wooden floor with area rugs is preferable to wall-to-wall carpeting for primitive living. Use of outdoor furniture will repel dirt/moisture, and is portable should earthquakes destroy the intended primary living residence. Appliances should be DC-electric powered as these use less power and can operate from 12V batteries which will likely be the only electrical option if the grid is down, and while AC can be operated through an inverter there is some loss from conversion. 12V appliances of a marine or RV standard will be more rugged and better likely to withstand damage from earthquakes. Though electricity availability will likely be minimal in the immediate aftermath having air conditioners and de-humidifiers in storage to be used later on to counteract wet conditions on hand may be of value. A wood stove will provide heat (add a non-electric fan to distribute the heat…these fans operate from the heat generated by the stove), and a wood-fired cooking oven may be preferable to cooking over a campfire. For laundry consider a non-electric clothes washing machine such as a James Washer, two bins for rinsing clothes, and a rack for hanging clothes that can be located adjacent to the wood stove – which will be needed as an outdoor clothes line will not work during the initial period of constant drizzle. Alternatively, washing of clothes can be accomplished using a plunger-like manual clothes washer. Be sure to boil frequently used clothing items such as undergarments to completely destroy bacteria, mold and fungus which will be pervasive. A tub can be used for bathing and have plenty of buckets and containers to transport water to the tub and for use when brushing teeth. A spinning/looming wheel and foot-powered sewing machine can be used for making and repairing clothes. A carbon monoxide detector/alarm is highly recommended when burning wood (can be used with rechargeable batteries) and also be sure to have proper ventilation if burning wood in tight enclosed quarters. Dishwashing can be done with containers such as 5 gallon buckets – the first for pre-rinse to collect the goop, the second for washing with hot potable soapy water, the third for rinsing with plain potable water and the fourth (optional) for disinfecting with roughly 1 part bleach to 10 parts water. The “gray water” produced by daily activities can be put on plants or into a hole. Assuming a septic field is no longer intact or is full then a dry toilet or composting out-house will be needed (an indoor composting toilet can be considered but may not work effectively without treatment chemicals). In the more immediate aftermath a dug hole can be used with wood ash and dirt put on each layer of excrement to repel flies.
