"The driver was not harmed," he said.
"Electricity to the overhead tram lines has been turned off while we first remove the prime mover and then right the trailer."
Senior Constable Esler said a bobcat had been called in to help with the clean up.
Peak hour traffic through the southern corner of the city will experience heavy delays as a result of the roll-over.
Traffic travelling into the city on Flinders Street is being diverted at Wurrundjeri Way. Flinders Street is blocked at King Street in the other direction. Cars travelling toward South Melbourne on Spencer Street are being diverted at Collins Street. Clarendon Street has been stopped at Normanby Road.
Trams on the 96, 109 and 112 routes on Spencer Street in both directions are affected, said Yarra Trams spokesman Colin Tyras.
‘‘Those lines are going to the stop closest to Spencer Street on the Port Melbourne side, near the Exhibition Centre," he said.
‘‘The 109 is resuming at Collins Street. The 96 is resuming at the corner of Bourke Street and Spencer Street,’’ said Mr Tyras.
He said the 70 and 75 routes on Flinders Street are terminating at King Street.
