Hell’s Kitchen

Made famous, most recently, by Martin Scorcese’s movie, “The Gangs of New York”, Hell’s Kitchen is an area of New York City with a rich and notorious history.

In the 19th Century it became a major industrial centre and home to over 350,000 immigrants, mostly from famine ravished Ireland. The residents lived in hastily erected tenement buildings in between factories and slaughterhouses.

In 1863 the area was the scene of a three-day riot in protest of the Civil War Conscription Act. There are no reliable figures for how many died during the riots but it was certainly in the thousands. The aftermath saw countless homeless children roaming the streets of. These street urchins soon formed into gangs and by the end of the 19th Century Hell’s Kitchen became the crime capital of the U.S.

The name Hell’s Kitchen refers to the area between 39th and 59th streets, and from 8th Avenue to the Hudson River. The origin of the term is ⑥attributed to a conversation between two policemen. While observing a small riot on 39th street the younger of the two said, ‘This place is hell itself’, to which the older policeman replied, ‘Hell’s a mild climate. This is Hell’s Kitchen’!
