NEW DELHI: Imagine living with the constant ticking of your heart ringing in your ears! Thousands of heart patients are forced to do just that, thanks to the shortage of valves at the heart valve bank of AIIMS.
The bank gets 100-150 cadaver valves annually. An estimated 30% of them have to be rejected for various reasons. The
total number of patients at the institute, who need a homograft (taken from another human) valve replacement, is about 600 annually.
The result - doctors are forced to use artificial (prosthetic) valves or those made from animal tissue (bioprosthetic valves). Prosthetic valves make a persistent ticking noise that has "profound psychological impact" on the patient.
It is costly - the patient has to go for artificial valves as well as periodic checks. The metallic valves reduce the life
expectancy of the patient.
He has to be put on anti-coagulant drugs for life, which increases the chances of bleeding to death following even a minor injury.
Despite 1,400 autopsies being annually done here, lack of awareness and relatives' reluctance is a hurdle in procuring fresh valves.
Another reason is the frequent
delay in autopsies. No valve can be accepted from a person who has died more than 24 hours earlier.
Dr Sampath Kumar, professor, department of cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, says: "Metallic valves cost Rs 48,000, the bioprosthetic one Rs 8,000 more. The total cost of the operation comes to about Rs 1 lakh, whereas, if homografts are available, the same can be done for half the sum."
