A valve in a water line serving a Freeport-McMoRan mine failed last week, shooting a 50-foot plume of water at a home in Canoa Estates II, leaving part of it flooded.
The homeowners were out of town and neighbors called
the Pima County Sheriff’s Department to report streams of water running down the street the evening of Dec. 23.
The spray of water was “pounding against the house,” according to an officer’s report. He also saw 8 to 10 inches of water “all around the sides of the house, beginning to leak up underneath the doors.”
Cholla cactuses were uprooted and a large branch of a Palo Verde tree was snapped off by the force of the water.
Green Valley Fire District crews knocked down part of a block wall to allow water building up in the back yard to drain and to prevent further damage to the house, the report said.
Freeport-McMoRan spokesman Richard Peterson said the problem was caused by a failed vacuum relief valve and that the buried water main did not fail.
“The failed vacuum relief valve has been replaced with a new valve, and we have made adjustments to help prevent this incident from happening
again, he wrote in an e-mail. “The pipeline did not contribute to this incident.”
The mine is covering the costs of repair and cleanup at the home, which was up for sale before the incident.
The home is in the 3000 block of Via de la Avefria, and borders the easement where the buried water line is located.
Homeowner Edward Pless would not comment other than to say the mine was being “very cooperative.”
A cleaning company was working inside the house last week.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, initial calls came in about 7:45 p.m. They contacted a local water company before discovering the water line belonged to Freeport-McMoRan.
Peterson said the Sheriff’s Department contacted the mine at 8:40 p.m., after which they shut off the pumps to begin repairs that night.
Before the incident, workers were replacing the main water
line, which runs along Duval Mine Waterline Road and extends from the mine to the company’s well field about 12 miles away.
That work should be completed by spring, Peterson said. The original main dates to the late 1960s.
