Word that Google would be purchasing Half-Life creator Valve Software has been swirling all morning, though if either firm is to be believed, those rumors have no basis in reality. The rumor originated in The Inquirer who cited "well placed sources" that lead them to believe that Google was after Valve’s digital distribution platform Steam. European consumer site Spong claims to have spoken to Doug Lombardi, Valve’s marketing director, who said that the idea of a buyout is "100 percent rumor." Google’s response is somewhat less cut and dry: When contacted for clarification, the search firm relied on the classic PR move of characterizing the report as "rumor and speculation." Even so, the idea was so utterly bizarre to begin with that until I see something more official than rumors in The Inquirer I’m going to have to have faith in Lombardi’s "100 percent rumor" line.
