Ernest Hemingway was well-known for being the representative of “the Lost Generation”. He was a public hero whose literature style is very popular in the world. As one who was living during the second World War, Hemingway’s works chiefly focused on the post-war generation to show the time when ‘God is dead ’.The publish of The Sun Also Raises represented the birth of the Lost Generation. Therefore, Hemingway becomes the spokesman for the Lost Generation. The Old Man and The Sea which was one of his best works helped him to get the Noble Prizes in 1954. Arguably, he was a better short-story writer than a novelist, although it was his longer works that built his reputation The Old Man and The Sea is a short novel of friendship between a young boy and an old fisherman suffered from hunger and ill luck. Santiago, who was created by Hemingway, was an undefeated hero of great brave, wisdom, dignity and difference, he had high moral and many characteristics. As we all know that the more simplicity it suggests, the stronger undercurrent of emotion it reflects. Hemingway used symbolism to describe the features of the main characters in his stories. This thesis focus on the symbols which Hemingway used in the story to give us a better look and an easier understanding of what the book is about. And the author is going to analyze the symbolism and Hemingway’s attitude toward life reflected by the symbols of this story.
