Fun on wheels!
I went to work by rollerblades today – the most fun way to get to work so far! I started out at 07:55 – and needed a few minutes to get back into the habit of rolling along – a fast and fun way to move! I was happy about my new helmet – I bought it yesterday after some of you rightly pointed out that I better use a helmet when cycling – and more so when you find your way through Guangzhou traffic on tiny roller blade wheels with no real brakes..
I was nervous about how to get across
Guangzhou bridge, but that went well. Then I turned right and
started on the best part of my trip – rolling down with the
Zhujiang on my right and the new monumental buildings of Zhujiang
Xin Chang on my left. By that time, the sun came out, and I
realised how nice this waterfront area will be when it is all done.
I then turned right on Xiancun Road and went straight all the way
up to Tian He Dong.
I bought my rollerblades in New York a long time ago and used them frequently there. Using skiing poles, I could really work up some speed. This was my first time ever in Guangzhou, and my ski poles are left back in Norway. Still it was great fun - the most fun way I have gotten to work in a long time. But make sure to pay attention to traffic if you want to try – and learn how to stop before you roll away!
I will revert next week with an analysis of all of the five different ways of transport I tried out this week. I think bike and metro are likely winners – but rollerblades was the most fun!
Throughout the week, my experiment has
been followed by a lot of journalists, I want to thank them for
their attention. Together, I hope we have contributed to an
important discussion about the role of urban transport in building
a better city for a better life.
Have a nice week-end!
