Glycol ethers and their esters are
colourless, stable liquids of high boiling
point and mild odour. With both an ether
group and an alcohol or ester group in
the same molecule, they can mix with
both water and other solvents, and
combine powerful dissolving
characteristics with low volatility.
This combination of properties gives
glycol ethers some key performance
characteristics for solvent-based systems
including:
● Miscibility with water
● Compatibility with a
wide range of polar
and non-polar solvents
● High solvent power
● Low volatility
● Mild odour
● Coalescence

Versatile, high performance solvents designed to meet the
increasing technical and environmental demands of solventbased
formulations. Glycol ethers are ideally suited to new
low aromatic, high solid and waterborne technologies driven
by legislation and consumer requirements.

Cosmetics/personal care
The solvent and coupling properties of
glycol ethers are utilised in many cosmetic
and toiletry formulations. They can be
used to stabilise emulsions used in lotions,
preventing the active ingredient particles
from dropping out of suspension.
This helps to maintain the aesthetic
appearance of the product and can
increase shelf-life. They can also
be used to improve water repellency
in products such as sun screens.
Industrial and household cleaners
Glycol ethers can be used in all types of
cleaners. They reduce surface tension and
are excellent coupling agents. Working in
conjunction with a surfactant, they facilitate
wetting of the surface, penetration of the
soil, and help to suspend the soil in water
until it is wiped or rinsed away.
The choice of glycol ether depends on the
type of cleaning application, the nature of
the soil, and the solubility and evaporation
rate required. Blends of glycol ethers and
surfactants can be used to optimise
cleaning performance and efficiency.

Coatings
Glycol ethers and their acetates are effective
in many surface coating technologies including;
● high and low solid coatings
● waterborne emulsions
● water-reducible coatings
As ‘true solvents’ glycol ethers are able
to dissolve many resins in all proportions,
and are particularly useful in promoting flow
properties. They also encourage good gloss
and film properties by maintaining the resin(s)
in solution throughout the film formation
process.
Glycol ethers also play an important part in
meeting VOC regulations. Their high solvent
power means they can be used in high
solids coatings to maintain low viscosity
and application performance properties.
Higher boiling glycol ethers and their esters
are efficient coalescent solvents in waterborne
latex emulsions. They reduce film formation
temperatures, allowing harder resins to be
formulated into ambient cure coatings.
Methyl PROXITOL acetate, which does
not contain a hydroxyl function, is an ideal
solvent for high solids, two-component
polyurethane coatings, as it does not
interfere with the curing reactions.
Inks
Combinations of glycol ethers and other
solvents can be used to achieve
the right evaporation rates,
levelling properties, water
miscibility and solubility
for ink formulations. They
can also be used to adjust
surface tension and viscosity,
promoting deep and even penetration
of inks on soft substrates.

Health and safety
In contrast to shorter alkyl-chain ethylenebased
glycol ethers, products in the Shell
product portfolio show no evidence of
reproductive toxicity (see Figure 3). This
advantage provides opportunities for
replacing short alkyl chain ethylene-based
glycol ethers in formulations where human
exposure cannot be excluded. In many
cases it is possible to make a direct
substitution, with cost effectiveness and
equivalent performance - for example ethyl
glycol ether can be replaced by Methyl
PROXITOL. In more complex applications
reformulation using a programme such
as Shell BlendPro™ can be used to find
the optimum replacement. Material safety
data sheets which provide additional
information about the health, safety and
regulatory status of Shell glycol ethers are
available for the OXITOL and PROXITOL
product ranges.
BlendPro™ is a powerful solvent reformulation
software programme developed by Shell to
enable solvents users to calculate solvent blend
properties and to reformulate blends with
respect to technical performance and/or costs.

a vapour pressure of 0.01 kPa or more.Our production capacity, along with
sales, marketing and logistics, is geared
to serve global markets, and to satisfy
growing demand for glycol ethers.
Construction of a new world-scale plant
at Pernis in the Netherlands has more
than doubled our potential output of
glycol ethers. The 100 kt plant sits
alongside another 55 kt multi-purpose
plant, while in North America we have
an additional 30 kt of EO glycol ethers
capacity. This production is backed by a
strong feedstock chain, primarily
supported by our own propylene oxide
and ethylene oxide plants, which
ensures security of supply for
customers.
