In this paper, the Selective Laser Melting of a TiCx/Ti powder as a new production route for the production of Ti/TiC nano-composite material was investigated. The present phases are identified and the nanometer and submicron level microstructure of the parts, produced at different scanning speeds, are characterized. A sound qualitative explanation for the formation and the non-formation of the nano-sized phase in relation to the process parameters is given.

This paper is relevant for researchers in the field of Additive Manufacturing, in specific Selective Laser Melting and in the field of the production of nanomaterials. The authors do demonstrate the formation of the nano-sized phase and give a qualitative, but sound explanation about the formation this phase in relation to the specific process conditions.

 

The paper is novel, clearly written and well organized. Also the given results are convincing and significant.

In the present revised manuscript, we think that using the XRD, SEM, and TEM characterization methods can well study the morphological changes and microstructural development during powder processing.
